LAVANYA SESHASAYEE’S LIFE EXPEDITION- NOT TREADING THE BEATEN TRACK AND BREAKING AWAY FROM STEREOTYPES!!! READ HER INSPIRING LIFE STORY HERE:
There was a time when Dr.Lavanya Seshasayee had an episode of Schizophrenia – that was the year 1995 on account of having been part of an exceedingly dysfunctional familial atmosphere that was also highly patriarchal for several years. She had been subjected to immense emotional harassment on account of the doings of one chauvinist sibling who wanted to create a Hitlerian Nazi-like atmosphere at home. Incidentally this sibling was being carried on top of his mother’s head like a trophy and sought to disrupt the good relationship that Dr.Lavanya who was just a 13-year old teenager then had with her mother. The nuances of interaction in the entire extended family favoured patriarchal oppression. It was assumed that girls were only instruments meant to propagate familial culture from one generation to the next. That girls were baby machines and beauty objects who would be eventually married off to ‘well-to-do’ families and did not have any great role to play besides that.
But Dr.Lavanya happened to be immensely ambitious and was exceedingly good at studies. She protested against this role-stereotyping that was so gender-biased and the result of her protest was severe harassment and punishment meted out to her that was so wicked it was to cripple her for a very long time-period. It was this that culminated in an attack of Schizophrenia in 1995. This was the point when she began seriously searching for answers to life’s most compelling questions. Her protests got stronger although she had no idea how to deal with the people in her dysfunctional environment. This caused a relapse in 1997 because she was prevented from going to college and studying. The ‘professional’ psychiatric and psychology communities had declared her a medical failure. But Dr. Lavanya had a brain that was frighteningly resilient. She refused to accept defeat. She converted her mother into a supporter and conceptualized a support system for herself to be able to study and recover simultaneously. Lalitha Seshasayee was trained by Dr.Lavanya in implementing this support system and it led to producing phenomenal results with Dr.Lavanya. She began her career from the scratch. She did a BA in which she won a silver medal, then an MA in Women’s Studies wherein she won a gold trophy on account of being one of the toppers at the university and then a PhD in Women’s Mental Health. She was then ready for bigger things in life. And she did find answers to a whole lot of questions she had about life eventually. She was invited to present research papers in several conferences on mental health being held across the world and in India too. She did vociferously present her capabilities-informed-model of recovery from Schizophrenia at these conferences in professional capacity and inspire various women across the world with her story of recovery from Schizophrenia too. She then started the Indian Women’s Recovery Movement in 2012. She worked for various NGOs over a period of 6 years to acquire financial resources and professional linkages and has now renamed her organization the GLOBAL WOMEN’S RECOVERY MOVEMENT – GWRM since recovery is not the sole privilege of Indian women. We need to reach out to the global population of women-sufferers and alleviate their suffering.
