The founder of the GWRM is Dr.Lavanya Seshasayee [a Ph.D. in Women’s Mental Health] and the inspiration behind the GLOBAL WOMEN’S RECOVERY MOVEMENT [GWRM] is Lalitha Seshasayee who is the mother of Dr.Lavanya Seshasayee. The Global Women’s Recovery Movement was started in 2010 under a different name – THE INDIAN WOMEN’S RECOVERY MOVEMENT to reach out to women with mental health problems/issues in India, to empower and help them find their own solutions to distress. At that point in time, it was the only organization that did work for women with psychosocial disabilities from an empowerment cum experiential angle. However, we did not have funds to run the movement. Funding was a difficult proposition back then [it still is]. So Dr.Lavanya Seshasayee worked for various NGOs over a period of 6 years to be able to acquire starting capital and better work experience and yes, it paid off. The purpose of the whole endeavour was achieved and gave rise to the GLOBAL WOMEN’S RECOVERY MOVEMENT since Dr.Lavanya believed she needed to not only reach out to women in India but also to women across the globe as they too spoke of the need for such an empowering mental health movement for women that would support them in their endeavour towards recovery when she met them during the various international conferences in which Dr.Lavanya presented her research papers. The need for a non-patriarchal, gender sensitive, capabilities-informed, recovery-inducing and empowering movement was most pressing and Dr.Lavanya and Lalitha decided to reach out to women with a social system of support for mental health issues. Whether the clients decided either to combine this support system with psychiatric medication or not was entirely left to them- the GWRM IS PRO-CHOICE. It is neither pro nor anti-psychiatry. Each person in need of mental solace coming to us is a human being first and a book in herself and the approach needs to be tailored to fit her needs. And this is what we are here to do. This is what we feel called to do!!!
